// Hole Release New Song “Samantha”//

What’s stopping Hole from becoming another one of those classic bands that falls apart a dozen times, leaving one sole member to trudge along in a sad collection of nostalgic tour revenue? Well, nothing, except for the fact that the band’s sole remaining member is Courtney Love and she knows how to remain a huge attraction. Cue ‘Samantha,’ the second peak at the band’s upcoming album ‘Nobody’s Daughter’ and a vintage slab of ’90s-redux guitar rock that premiered Tuesday on Stereogum.

The track, penned by songwriters Linda Perry and Billy Corgan, has been around for years. Originally intended for a Love solo record that never came to fruition, it actually works way better as a Hole song. Check the merry-go-round of a chorus: “People like you f—- people like me/In order to avoid agony/To avoid suffering.” This is the rough-and-tumble, Cobain-infused Courtney Love that audiences originally fell for in the mid-’90s.

Riding a bass anchor akin to the Stooges’ ‘Search and Destroy,’ Love and her studio compatriots work into an honest rock frenzy. The real highlight becomes her voice — once affected to appear trashy and now legitimately thrashed from a life of self-abuse and public tantrums. Hitting a final peak, Love wigs out and fixates on her favorite f-word over and over again, like it’s her own personal version of a hymn.
